Requiem for Radio: Full Quiet Flutter (RFR : FQF) est une performance en direct de 60 minutes mettant en scène des corps humains, des électrons et des ondes radio. L’architecture, la technologie, l’histoire et le corps humain se rencontrent dans cette évocation quasi surnaturelle des esprits des tours de radiodiffusion de Radio Canada International (RCI). Structurée en treize mouvements – un pour chacune des treize tours –, la performance suit le format d’un requiem traditionnel, mais dédié au site d’émission de RCI, autrefois situé près de la frontière entre le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Nouvelle-Écosse, d’où des ondes courtes étaient diffusées à travers le monde de 1944 à 2012. Les interprètes sur scène interagissent avec un ensemble élaboré d’instruments électroniques inventés ou modifiés, utilisant des capteurs, des circuits personnalisés et des technologies sans fil pour faire résonner les fantômes des tours à travers les ondes radio. Bien qu’ancrée dans la technologie, cette performance est avant tout une œuvre sur la connexion – entre les personnes, les lieux, et les forces invisibles qui nous relient tous.
Requiem for Radio: Full Quiet Flutter (RFR: FQF) is a 60 minute live performance for human bodies, electrons, and radio waves. Architecture, technology, history, and the human body come together in this near-supernatural conjuring of the spirits of the Radio Canada International (RCI) shortwave towers. Structured with thirteen movements for the thirteen radio towers, the performance follows the format of a traditional requiem, but for the RCI shortwave site that was once located near the border of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia from where it transmitted shortwave radio around the world from 1944 to 2012. The performers on stage interact with an elaborate set of invented and modified electronic instruments that use sensors, custom circuits, and wireless technology to play the ghosts of the radio towers with radio waves. While technological in nature, this performance remains one about connection – between people, places, and the unseen forces that bind us all.
